It underscores just how much personal preferences (even among the most ardent whisky fans) can differ. <br /><br />I approached this one with some caution. I was excited about the "mission" CB had taken on and hoped I'd still enjoy it and that it wouldn't feel "lesser" than some of their other stuff. I also hoped that it wasn't just all marketing the "cause". <br /><br />After tasting it, I think they executed well. It was much richer and lusher than I expected it would be. Not particularly complex but certainly round and full in flavor. It's fruity and has a great mouth feel and body.<br /><br />I do agree that having Asyla at close to the same price makes the decision for which one to purchase a little more difficult. To your point, I also agree that if the malt's the star here (and it is) does that defeat the purpose? Well maybe, but the grain definitely makes its present felt. It lightens things up and dresses the malt down a bit.<br /><br />It may not be a grand slam home run, but it wasn't intended to be.
